Beschreibung & Reiseverlauf

This horseback safari in the north of India takes you from Udaipur to the Malwa plain, east of the Aravalli Mountains. The Malwa Plain is a fertile plain that stretches from Rajasthan to Central India and was fiercely contested until the 19th century. Rajputs, Moguls, Marathens and Afghans banged their heads here and built fortifications, forts and castles, some of which still exist today. The landscape of the Malwa plain is extremely attractive with many small lakes, palm groves and woodlands alternating with dry savannah and cultivated areas. The plain, only occasionally broken by crevices and gorges, is ideal terrain for horseback riding. It is especially attractive in spring (January to April), when the typical dhak trees in their strong orange colour and the poppy fields in bright white blossom.

The area is quite undeveloped for tourism, but has many hidden jewels to offer. The riding safari leads the riders through the outskirts of the national park Jaisamand and with a little luck you can watch antelopes or smaller animals like monkeys, mongooses and many birds. From Lake Jaisamand we go down to the Malwa Plain, through one of the most historically interesting areas of Rajasthan. The fiefdoms of the most important nobles of Mewar once stood here and still today numerous havelis, rawlas (manor houses) and palaces bear witness to the splendour of past times. The former fief of the hosts´ family is also located here, the village of Boheda, one of the best starting points to explore the Sita-Mata National Park.

The visit to Sita-Mata marks the end of this trail. The last large forest area of the Malwa plain is mainly home to the leopard and the largest Indian antelope species, the nilgai, a rather shapeless looking animal that resembles the African kudu. The male animals have a shimmering blue coat, hence the Indian name Nilgai - blue cow. From time to time our riders can catch a glimpse of the rare Four-Horned Antelopes or the graceful Chinkara Gazelles. Very tame here are the Hanuman monkeys and the Rajasthanian heraldic bird, the peacock.

Reiseverlauf

Day 1: Arrival in Udaipur and transfer to a middle class hotel. Afterwards sightseeing in Udaipur, safari briefing and dinner together on the roof terrace of the hotel with a view of the illuminated city palace of Udaipur. Overnight stay in a middle class hotel in Udaipur.

Day 2: After breakfast transfer to the farm and getting to know the horses and the guides. After trying out the horses on the farm, start your day´s ride through the Aravalli Mountains. The ride will take you to the tribal area of the Bhils, an old Indian ethnic group that prefers to settle on small farms and huts in the mountains. You will ride past their fields and homesteads and meet Bhil women and children who herd their goats and water buffaloes and the men do the field work. The ride takes you through riverbeds, some of which have dried up during the year, and along game trails through the mountains. If you are lucky you will see bright blue kingfishers, colourful peacocks and maybe even mongooses and Nilgai antelopes. Your picnic lunch will stop at a small riverbed where the horses can enjoy the grass. After lunch you continue your journey. In an arc you ride past several lakes and a small temple back to the farm. Here tea or coffee is already waiting for the riders. Afterwards you go back to Udaipur. Dinner and overnight stay in a middle class hotel in Udaipur.

Day 3: Khurabar - Badwei
After breakfast the riders will be taken to the starting point of the first day´s stage, about 40km from Udaipur. Here you will meet your horses and the guide. After a first riding day yesterday, today we can start directly. The first part of the daily stage leads through the fertile valleys around Kharabar. You ride over sandy paths past green fields, which are still cultivated and ploughed by the farmers with oxen. Women in colourful saris carry water jugs on their heads and children wave to you more or less shyly. Around noon we head back into the mountains and the land becomes wilder and more barren. Horse and rider have to do some climbing, but this is rewarded with a spectacular view. The region between Khurabar and Bambora is a nature reserve and is subject to strict nature conservation regulations. In the afternoon, the mountains are behind the riders and you will come down into foothills of the Malwa plain. In the late afternoon you arrive at Lake Badwei, a shallow water lake, which is a magnet for many bird species in the region. Depending on the season, flamingos, cranes and other large birds can be observed. All year round you can see kingfishers, numerous species of spoonbills and ducks. Overnight stay in the safari camp at the lake.

Day 4: Badwei - Boheda
Today´s ride takes the riders from Lake Badwei to Boheda, the former fief of the family of the riding stable owner. The trail leads through the heart of the Malwa plain and crosses a small railway line that connects Barisadri and Mauvi once a week with a steam locomotive. Between December and March poppy is grown here in small fields (for the production of opium), but under strict conditions. The cultivation of opium is historical and the reason for long wars between Rajputs, Marathans and Moguls over this area.
The riding tempo is faster today and the horses enjoy the soft ground under their hooves.
Arrival in Boheda around 16:00 and overnight in the safari camp just outside the village. If possible, take a ride in the late afternoon on an ox cart, the traditional means of transport in India, through the village - a completely different, fascinating perspective!

Day 5: Ride to the Sita-Mata National Park The riding safari takes you today to the Sita-Mata National Park, which you will reach after about 2.5 hours in the saddle. You set off early for your day´s ride to Sita-Mata, one of the most beautiful national parks in southern Rajasthan. Sita-Mata is off the beaten path and very rarely does a visitor stray here. The park includes Leopards, jungle cats, Chinkara gazelles, Nilgai anilopes, Chittal and Sambar deer as well as Hanuman monkeys are native, but mostly shy and widely distributed in the huge nature reserve. Sita-Mata has over 250 native bird species from the smallest hummingbird to the majestic peacock. It is one of the last remaining forest areas on the Malwa plain and its pristine nature enchants the riders again and again. Return to Boheda around 5:30 p.m. (long ride, approx. 7 hours).

Day 6: Boheda - Parsoligarh - Boheda After breakfast you ride around the village of Boheda and after a ride through green fields lined with palm trees, you finally come to a hilly landscape that is far more lonely and barren than the plain. Depending on the season, the hills are overgrown with green steppe grass or a brown and gold savannah. With a little luck, Nilgai antelopes or even gazelles can be seen. Around noon the riders come to the ruin of the old Parsoligarh Fort. This huge fortification from the Middle Ages is lonely and abandoned on a hill with a magnificent view of the surroundings. Here you can imagine the former power and splendor of the Rajputs. Take your picnic today in the courtyard of the gigantic facility. Afterwards you have time to climb the old walls and enjoy the view over the hills and a small lake. After lunch we continue through the hills and past small temples back to the plain. Overnight at the Safari Camp near a small village. Today´s New Year´s Eve tour is the turn of the year, with a little festivity in the camp, a special dinner and later a bonfire romance with sparklers and nudges at midnight. From the camp, the riders can watch the fireworks in the nearby village and it is always a very special evening despite simple means.

Day 7: Boheda - Mangalwad Today´s riding day leads over a dry plain with many possibilities to long gallops. The terrain is open and the ground is sandy. Occasionally you come through small villages and ride past fields. There are many herds of Nilgai in this area and you will always see this largest Indian antelope species. The antelopes must not be hunted and are more curious than shy, so that horses and riders can often get very close. After a last long gallop you come to the lake in Mangalwad, another artificial shallow water lake. There are also many bird species here, although not quite as many as in Badwei. Overnight in a safari camp on the lake.

Day 8: Star ride Mangalwad The last day of riding is a star ride through the Mangalwad area. You ride to a large reservoir where you have a picnic lunch. The ride leads over a steppe with lots of opportunities to trot and gallop. Again and again you see antelopes and with a little luck even the shy Indian gazelles. From time to time you come through villages or ride past palm groves. Return to the lake camp late afternoon.

Day 9: Transfer back to Udaipur in the morning, sightseeing in Udaipur in the afternoon. You can also visit the mighty Chittor fortress not far from Udaipur (optional, depending on group size). Overnight at the pretty Haveli Hotel in the center of Udaipur (good middle class).

Day 10: Departure after breakfast.

Changes possible at any time.

The cultivation of opium is historical and the reason for lengthy wars between Rajputs, Marathes and Mughals around this area. The riding pace is still fast today and the horses enjoy the soft ground under their hooves. Arrival in Boheda around 4:00 p.m. and overnight in our safari camp a bit outside the village. If possible, we organize a ride in the ox cart, the traditional means of transportation in India, through the village in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Sixth safari day and ride through Sita-Mata. Today the riders set off early for their day ride through one of the most beautiful national parks in South Rajasthan. Sita-Mata is off the beaten path and very rarely does a visitor stray here. This makes the animals that are native to this park, including Leopards, jungle cats, Chinkara gazelles, Nilgai anilopes, Chittal and Sambar niches, Hanuman monkeys, not as shy as anywhere else. Sita-Mata has over 250 native bird species from the smallest hummingbird to the majestic peacock. It is one of the last remaining forest areas on the Malwa plain and its pristine nature enchants the riders again and again. Return to Boheda around 5:30 p.m.

Day 8: After breakfast you ride around the village of Boheda and after a ride through green fields lined with palm trees, you finally come into a hilly landscape that is far more lonely and barren than the plain. Depending on the season, the hills are overgrown with green steppe grass or a brown and gold savannah. With a little luck, Nilgai antelopes or even gazelles can be seen. Around noon the riders come to the ruins of the old Parsoligarh Fort. This medieval fortification is lonely and abandoned on a hill with a view of the surroundings. Picnic lunch is in the courtyard of the gigantic facility. Afterwards the riders have time to discover the walls and to enjoy the view over the hills and a small lake. After lunch we continue through the hills and small temples back to the plain. Overnight in our Safari Camp in Boheda.

Day 9: Today´s riding day leads over a dry plain with many possibilities to long gallops. The terrain is open and the ground is sandy. Occasionally the riders come through small villages and ride past fields. There are many herds of Nilgai in this area and you will always see this largest Indian antelope species. The antelope must not be hunted and are more curious than shy, so that horse and rider can often get very close. After a last long gallop, the riders come to the lake in Mangalwad, another flat water lake. There are also many bird species here, and with a bit of luck, antelopes come close to our camp to drink in the evening. Overnight in our safari camp at the lake.

Day 10: After breakfast, drive back to Udaipur and there an opportunity for sightseeing and / or shopping. You visit the city palace, the virgin garden and the Fatehsagar lake. The Holi fires take place in the evening. We take part in the centuries-old tradition in the Udaipur City Palace. Dr Maharana invites and comes to the ceremony in his four-in-hand carriage with a move. Afterwards there is a cocktail reception with Indian dances and if you want you can meet the Maharana and exchange a few words with him. Overnight at the hotel in Udaipur.

Day 11: Holi celebration and Indian color festival. You celebrate first in the street in front of the hotel and then drive to various friends and family members as is the tradition of Holi. Everywhere you are entertained with sweets and drinks and can experience and celebrate Holi with the people. Around noon we go to the farm where we continue to party and will finally eat. In the afternoon everyone can clean up and rest before heading back to the hotel in the evening. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Udaipur.

Day 12: One last morning ride and then end of the program towards late morning. Depending on the departure time, there is still time for a last sightseeing or shopping. Luggage can be left at the hotel and we organize the airport transfer at the appropriate time.

Changes to the riding tour possible at any time.
