Over 30,000 hectares of wilderness without fences and with countless wild animals and magnificent scenery await you on this Lodge. In the heart of the Laikipia highlands, just 50 km from the equator, you will find an impressive variety of wildlife at the foot of the mighty Mount Kenya: big game such as elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, but also rare species such as wild dogs, as well as plenty of antelopes, gazelles, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and over 350 different bird species. The flora and fauna are also unique and the wealth of different ecosystems is impressive. Vast savannahs in the north are home to animals such as Oryx antelopes, Beisa antelopes, Grant's gazelles, cheetahs and ostriches. In the south of Ranch the bush is denser and gives way to acacia woodlands, which are home to several herds of elephant. The Laikipia region is one of the most densely populated elephant regions in Kenya. With 70 mammal and 30 reptile species, the Lodge has a truly exceptional abundance of wildlife.
Your safari rides are therefore varied every day and offer many impressive wildlife encounters on horseback!
Very popular with riders, Lodge is located at an altitude of over 1,800 m, which guarantees a pleasant climate all year round. The area is also malaria-free and therefore particularly attractive for families.

Horseback safaris are a wonderful way to explore the African bush and Laikipia Safari Lodge is one of the best places to do this. The varied terrain offers the opportunity to ride through rivers or across vast plains to ride. On horseback you become one with the landscape and experience nature much more intensively. Experienced riders will be thrilled to see lots of big game from saddle , as will the long, fast gallops through the golden savannah. Pure riding freedom awaits you here on the Laikipia Safari Lodge! Roam the different landscapes every day in search of wild animals!
The riding program is individually tailored to your wishes and requirements.
The rides are usually in the morning or evening hours in groups of up to 8 riders and usually last between 2-3 hours. The safari rides are always accompanied by an experienced guide and a second riding guide.
Short rides near Lodge and basic riding lessons are offered for children and beginners (in separate groups).

Itinerary

A typical day at the lodge

You wake up at dawn and enjoy a warm cup of tea while the world around you awakens. This is followed by a light breakfast before you saddle up for your morning safari ride. Every day is different and offers the opportunity to observe elephants, water buffalo, wild dogs, and many other wild animals in a dreamlike landscape.
After your morning ride, you return to the lodge, where a hearty English breakfast awaits you.
When the heat of the day sets in, it's time to cool off in the river. Adventurous guests can jump down the approximately 9-meter-high waterfall. Alternatively, you can swim and relax in the inviting pools at the foot of the waterfall or float comfortably on the river with a swim ring. Anglers can try their luck at fishing.
Swimming makes you hungry – it's time for a delicious picnic on the riverbank. Elephants and birds often come to the riverbank to drink.
At lunchtime, when it is hottest, you can relax by the pool at the lodge, read a book, or take a siesta.
After afternoon tea with fragrant coffee, tea, and freshly baked cake, it's time for more exploration. You can go for another horseback ride, a jeep safari, or a guided bush walk. If you feel like trying something completely new, you can also go on a guided camel ride – a very special treat: at a leisurely pace, you ride the camels through the bush, alongside zebras, antelopes, impalas, and eland antelopes. Afterwards, a surprise dinner by candlelight under the starry sky in the middle of the bush awaits you – a magnificent setting! Enjoy a typical African sundowner, such as a glass of gin and tonic, around the campfire while the steaks sizzle on the grill. After a delicious dinner, you will set off on a night game drive in a jeep. Equipped with flashlights, you can discover the nightlife and see wild animals such as genets, aardvarks, mongooses, and, with a little luck, even a leopard.
Afterwards, you can choose whether you would prefer to spend the night in the lodge or around the campfire under the African starry sky (warm sleeping bags are provided). Falling asleep to the sounds of an African night is a very special experience.

Horseback riding program

Horseback safaris are a wonderful way to explore the African bush, and Laikipia Safari Lodge is one of the best places to do so. The varied terrain offers the opportunity to ride through rivers or wide plains. On horseback, you become one with the landscape and experience nature so much more intensely. Seeing lots of big game from the saddle will make the heart of every experienced rider beat faster, as will the fast, long gallops through the golden savannah. Pure riding freedom awaits you here at Laikipia Safari Lodge! Roam the different landscapes every day in search of wild animals!
The riding program is tailored to your wishes and requirements.
The rides usually take place in the morning or evening in groups of up to 8 riders and generally last between 2 and 3 hours. The safari rides are always accompanied by an experienced guide and a second riding guide.
For children and beginners, short rides near the lodge and basic riding lessons are offered (in separate groups).Activities
Laikipia Safari Lodge offers a wide range of activities for riders and non-riders alike, such as hiking, camel safaris, night game drives, fishing, archery, tennis, and swimming at the waterfall behind the lodge. Guests can also participate in ranch life.

Jeep safaris
Jeep safaris are offered in 4x4 off-road vehicles with specially raised seats. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to observe wildlife, as they become more active when it cools down. At midday, however, you can watch elephants cooling off at the river.
The drives take you to wide plains and bushland where you can see oryx, hartebeest, ostriches, Grant's gazelles, giraffes, elephants, bat-eared foxes, and zebras, among other animals. On safari, keep an eye out for large predators such as lions and cheetahs.
On night drives, you will search for nocturnal animals such as bush babies and leopards.

Guided bush walks
Hiking is the most direct way to experience the bush. Led by an experienced game warden, you will learn how to track animals and what flora and fauna can be found in this environment. The rare wild dogs can be tracked using the collars of the Laikipia Predator Project. The hikes last between 20 minutes and up to 4 hours.
For birdwatchers, Sosian offers a variety of 350 exotic species. The gamekeepers are all enthusiastic ornithologists and are happy to share their extensive knowledge with you. Most birds can be observed near the river, in the garden, and on the plains.

Camel riding
Camels have been part of the northern Kenyan landscape for hundreds of years and were kept for their meat and milk. Contrary to popular belief, when well cared for, they are very good-natured and even-tempered. On a ride into the bush, you can observe wild animals from the back of a camel.

Fly camps
To get even closer to the bush, you can also spend the night outdoors around a campfire. As you lie under the sparkling starry sky, marvel at the Southern Cross and count shooting stars, you will hear lions roaring in the distance and be surrounded by the impressive sounds of Africa.

River & fishing
The Ewaso Narok River with its 9-meter-high waterfall is one of the highlights of Laikipia Safari Lodge. If you are looking for a thrill and are brave enough, you can jump down the waterfall. The riverbank is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Animals often come to the water to quench their thirst, giving you an excellent opportunity to observe elephants up close! You can float downstream on inner tubes. The river is teeming with fish, including catfish, yellowfish, and cichlids, which are relatively easy to catch.

Accomodation
The Laikipia Safari Lodge is a lovingly restored African-style Ranch, which was built in the 1940s by Italian artists. The Lodge can accommodate up to 15 guests in a private, family atmosphere. The four cottages are set in a tropical garden with views of Mount Kenya and a pristine African landscape. Each cottage has its own veranda and bathroom.
Families are also very welcome. There is a family cottage with a second room for up to 3 children and its own bathroom. There is also a slightly larger honeymoon cottage available.
The Lodge is also known for its excellent cuisine with many fresh ingredients, e.g. from its own organic vegetable garden. Lettuce, beet, chard, onions, leeks, zucchinis, spinach, celery, chillies, tomatoes, passion fruit, carrots, limes, lemons, oranges and many spices are grown here. Cattle are also bred here. This means that Lodge is almost independent in its supply - the majority comes from its own production.
Lunch is served either by the pool or as a picnic on the go. You can enjoy your multi-course dinner in style at the laid table in the restaurant or outside under the stars.
The Lodge also offers a pool, a cozy bar and a tennis court with sweeping views over the plain. There is also a small souvenir store where you can buy artworks by local Kenyan artists.

Saddle & Tack: English. Comfortable saddles, e.g. Polo, Wintec, Australian stock saddles.

Experience: For the safari rides: From approx. 3-5 years riding experience on trails. You must be comfortable in all gaits. There are some opportunities for fast gallops in open terrain. You must be also able to control your horse safely in a group. Beginners go on quiet rides in small groups, close to the Lodge.

Horses: Approx. 26 horses (including ponies for children), most of them bred at the Lodge , including English thoroughbred, warmblood and mixes. Agile, forward-going and sure-footed. The horses are specially trained for the riding safaris and the proximity to wild animals.
