Cathar Ride
You will ride along historic trails from France to Spain. These are the same trails that the Cathars used to flee from the Inquisition. The route takes you through alpine fir forests, across alpine meadows, and past the limestone cliffs of Cadi (1,800 m). With a little luck, you may spot vultures, eagles, and chamois in the Cadi-Moixero National Park. On the Spanish side, you will ride through the wild and romantic Segre Valley, where you can enjoy beautiful gallops. Along the way, you will pass a monastery and several ancient mountain villages, including Dorres with its typical cathedral and stone houses. Picasso once spent some time in Gosol in Spain. The destination is the village of Berga, from where you will return to the riding stable in Les Angles.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome, evening meal and get-together to get to know the group. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the activities available at the farm before a briefing to prepare you for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: On the first day, you will set off straight into the unspoilt mountains of the Pyrenees. Along the way, you will enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Sierra del Cadí and the mountain lakes. A start that immediately sets the mood for adventure! Riding time approx. 5 hours, 18 km.

Day 3: You continue your journey through wild landscapes and gradually approach the Spanish border. This is where the “Cathar Exile Trail” begins, steeped in history and emotion. Riding time approx. 5 hours, 22 km.

Day 4: Today you cross the border and enter Spain via centuries-old smugglers' trails. The route then follows the the Segre River and offers typical hilly landscapes of Catalonia. Riding time approx. 4.5 hours, 25 km.

Day 5: Today you leave the Cerdanya plateau to cross the Sierra del Cadí. The ascent is more challenging, but the magnificent panoramic views reward your efforts. You then ride down to the town of Bagà, an important place in Cathar history. Riding time approx. 5.5 hours, 26 km.

Day 6: We continue our journey to the picturesque village of Gósol, famous in the early 20th century for having hosted Picasso. The trails wind between mountains and valleys, offering unique views. Riding time approx. 4.5 hours, 26 km.

Day 7: On the last day, you will ride through the Saldes Valley, in the heart of breathtaking gorges. The wild and timeless atmosphere of these gorges is a beautiful end to this journey through Cathar history. Riding time approx. 4.5 hours, 26 km.

Day 8: Breakfast and departure.

Accomodation
You will spend the night in hotels and guest houses in double and shared rooms.

Saddle & Tack: Western saddles and Hackamore.

Experience: You should be confident in all gaits and already have trail experience. Good fitness and sure-footedness, the horses are often led downhill.

Horses: Approx. 25 reliable small horses, including many Appaloosas.
