A day’s horse ride in the Hunsrück region

At the end of May, I took part in a guided day’s horse ride in the Western riding style. The route took us through a varied landscape in the low mountain range, featuring dense forests, open clearings and expansive fields. The pleasant temperatures and the spring-like scenery provided ideal conditions for a lovely ride with long stretches of trotting.

A particular highlight of the ride was the section through the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The nature park is characterised by its extensive woodlands, unspoilt landscapes and a high level of biodiversity. Throughout the ride, there were repeated opportunities to enjoy impressive views of the varied low-mountain landscape with its woods, meadows and fields. The well-preserved natural environment and the peaceful surroundings made this section a special experience and highlighted the relaxing nature of the entire tour. At the same time, the route gave an authentic impression of the scenic beauty and cultural richness of the Hunsrück region.


At lunchtime, the group stopped off at a traditional mountain hut. There, the participants were able to enjoy regional dishes in a cosy atmosphere and take a longer break. The food and the rustic ambience contributed to a pleasant respite during the tour. The ride was led by a very experienced guide, who guided the group safely through the countryside and was always on hand to answer any questions. Thanks to his calm and competent manner, both experienced riders and the children felt well looked after. He knows everyone in the area and had plenty of stories to tell. He is also an active member of the Hunsrück Trekking Riding Association (Wanderreiten Hunsrück eV) and is committed to its cause.
Despite the initial thunderstorm warning, the weather improved, so we were able to add a few detours and ride a longer route. The ride was generally at a brisk pace; the horses are fit and have good stamina. As well as the long stretches of trotting, there were also the odd section of canter.

There are various breeds, so every rider can find a hire horse to suit them.
All in all, the day’s ride offered a successful combination of experiencing nature, Western-style riding and a sense of camaraderie amongst the riders. The varied route, the professional guidance and the family-friendly atmosphere made the tour an all-round positive experience.
