Finland- Lake Saimaa
Slow Travel in the Saimaa Lake District of Southern Finland
Our three days in the Saimaa Lake District in southern Finland were marked by nature, a slower pace of life, and warm hospitality. The region offers ideal conditions for a relaxing stay in the spirit of Slow Travel—far away from everyday life and nestled in Finland’s impressive lake landscape. Historically, the region around Lappeenranta has been shaped by horses. In June, you also have the chance to see the midnight sun, and my stay was filled with the magical moments of the midsummer.

A particular highlight was the horseback riding program. Various horse breeds are available for riders of all skill levels, so everyone can find the right horse for their preferences—from leisurely rides through nature to spirited gallops. My own ride was quite brisk and offered plenty of fun and variety. Overall, the riding stable made an excellent impression: The horses live on spacious pastures, the grounds are very well-maintained, and the dedicated stable team ensures the well-being of both the animals and the guests with a great deal of expertise and passion.

The accommodations also played a major role in making this a special experience. I stayed in a traditional Finnish log cabin that was furnished with great attention to detail and exuded a warm, cozy atmosphere. Its location right on the lake offered breathtaking views at any time of day. The outdoor sauna, in particular, made the stay an authentic Finnish experience and provided the perfect opportunity to relax after an active day. Culinary-wise, the trip impressed with creative cuisine that skillfully blends Finnish traditions with international influences. The dishes were varied, expertly prepared, and reflected both a connection to the region and an openness to modern culinary experiences.

A key part of the trip was the concept of slow travel. Instead of visiting as many sights as possible in a short time, the focus was on consciously experiencing the surroundings. The tranquility of the lake landscape, time spent with the horses, relaxing hours by the water, and soothing sauna sessions made it possible to leave everyday life behind and fully immerse oneself in the moment. The combination of nature, regional experiences, and personal hospitality highlighted just how enriching slow and sustainable travel can be. The Saimaa Lake District offers the ideal setting for this and invites you to discover the beauty of Finland with all your senses.
Another highlight was a boat tour on Lake Saimaa. From the water, you get unique views of the unspoiled nature, the numerous islands, and the tranquil expanse of the lake region. The silence and serenity of the landscape made the trip an unforgettable experience. I especially remember the hostess, who takes care of her guests with great warmth and attention. She caters to individual needs and creates an atmosphere where you feel welcome from the very first moment. I was also delighted to see a foal born during my stay.

Overall, our stay in the Saimaa Lake District was a successful blend of activities, enjoying nature, culinary delights, and relaxation—truly in the spirit of slow travel. Anyone looking to experience Finland authentically and consciously slow down will find the ideal conditions here for an unforgettable getaway.
