The ride from the mountains to sea takes you along the Gulf of Rosas and through the idyllic Catalan hinterland with the foothills of the Pyrenees and the plains of Alt Empodà. The route takes you through pretty villages, past churches and castles to the imposing cathedral of Castelló de Empuries. You will discover medieval villages such as Besalu, mountains, grain fields, poppies and sunflowers, forests, wild herbs and narrow paths that lead you into the mountains to lead. A highlight is the lively beach gallop!
The Besalú Medieval Ride is the short version without the beach section. Three full days of horseback riding, for rider who want to enjoy their free time in nature, through the interior of Catalonia. It is a route through the fantastic landscape of the Empordà and Garrotxa region of Masia Can Grau. This beautiful region offers a rich medieval history, a great variety of landscapes, charming villages, small medieval sites, paths along fields and farmlands to give you a perfect experience for unique and unforgettable days on horseback.
Itinerary
From the mountains to sea (8 days)
Day 1: Arrival at the airport and transfer to the accommodation. The country house is located in the heart of nature. The beach and cities such as Figueras, Girona and Barcelona are also not far away. Before dinner, over a glass of local country wine, you will discuss the week's program with your guide and learn more about the characteristics of the pure-bred Andalusian and Anglo-Arabian horses. Afterwards, you will enjoy a delicious dinner together.
Day 2: After breakfast, you prepare the horses with the help of the guide and set off on your 200 km long Riding tour tour. On the way, you will pass through idyllic villages with old stone arches and metal doors, churches and castles. Via field and forest paths and after a lunch break with a picnic, you will reach the Mediterranean coast and the Gulf of Rosas in the afternoon. Your hotel is located near the beach.
Day 3: You to stand up early and to tack up the horses. The beach awaits you as a highlight! You can really let the horses run in the damp sand . A pleasure for rider and horses alike! At the end of the beach to ride you head inland again, upstream. Through a bird sanctuary, fruit plantations and rice fields, you arrive in Casellò de Empuries, your destination for today. A delicious picnic awaits you. The afternoon is at leisure. There is time to visit the Dali Museum in Figueras or simply have a drink and a few tapas on one of the town's cozy terraces.
Day 4: Today is a long day of around 40 km. After a hearty breakfast on the roof terrace with a view of the mountains, you prepare the horses. You turn away from sea back and approach the mountains at a brisker pace. Through Mediterranean forests that exude a wonderful scent, you arrive at your picnic spot. In the afternoon, the landscape changes to cork oak and pine forests and olive groves. Your hotel is located at the other end of the Boadella reservoir. This former power station has been tastefully converted into a small hotel. A haven of peace and the spa area await you. After three days on horseback, this is a well-deserved rest.
Day 5: After saddling up, the route today takes you to the most remote area of the high Garrotxa. You will reach Sant Llorenc de la Muga at midday via the mountains covered in spruce and oak trees. After a picnic at river , the route climbs even higher. Here it gets a little rockier and you to rear also dismount from time to time to walk the horses a little to lead. Towards evening, you reach Sant Marti de Seserres, a secluded village known for its church and 12th century rectory. The horses stay here overnight and you drive by car to your hotel in Espinavessa, a charming 17th century farmhouse that has been converted for tourism.
Day 6: They pick up the horses and set off for Besalu. In the morning it is still a little mountainous. The lunch break is in the medieval Besalu with its spectacular bridge. A jewel of Romanesque architecture, between two rivers, with its stone columns and arches, small squares and narrow alleyways. It is well worth a visit! In the afternoon, the journey continues quickly until you arrive in La Palma, where you spent the night the day before. Traditional dishes are served for dinner. Enjoy your meal!
Day 7: In the morning, the horses will carry you over the wooded mountains to the villages of Ollers and Galliners, where you can once again see beautiful examples of Catalan architecture. Picnic between rosemary and thyme meadows. Then you set off on the last stage of your journey. Trotting and galloping, you reach the village of Bascara. It's not far now and at a leisurely pace, via the village of Calabuig with its 15th century castle-church, you arrive back at Riding centre . After you have looked after the horses, you can relax in the garden or by the pool before ending the week with a final dinner together.
Day 8: Breakfast and transfer to the airport. (subject to change)
New Year's ride: Slightly different route so that the riding group can spend New Year's Eve at the pretty Can Grau estate.
Besalú Medieval Ride (5 days)
Day 1: In the evening, you arrive at your first accommodation - a country estate called Can Grau, which is located in the heart of the Empordá. The horses are kept here in a species-appropriate manner amidst fields and forests. Before dinner, you will discuss the riding program and horse allocation with your host.
Day 2: After breakfast, you leave the estate on horseback. You cross the village Vilafreser and its medieval church of Sant Sadurní and then to ride gently through an oak forest, accompanied by the scents of thyme and rosemary. The route continues through the beautiful area of Vilademuls, a large municipality made up of 12 small villages and numerous "masias", which bear witness to traditional Catalan rural life. The oldest documentary reference to Vilademuls, dating back to 922, states that the name comes from the settlement of a farm dedicated to the breeding of mules, hybrids of horse and mule or donkey and mare . Every hour we pass another beautiful village with a church, arches, tunnels and old wooden doors with wrought-iron knockers. We will enjoy our daily picnic to tighten and then beautiful trotting and cantering routes through Mediterranean forests until we reach the Hotel Masía La Palma, another old farmhouse that has been converted into a comfortable country house. After stabling our horses in the paddocks, we relax by the swimming pool or in the garden before enjoying a delicious dinner.
Day 3: After an excellent breakfast to ride You will head to river Fluvia in the forest and across the gentle hill of the surrounding area. You to ride through typical Mediterranean scrubland vegetation, dense with shrubs and calcareous soil. This is a rocky area with old buildings of traditional rural architecture such as shepherds' huts and small stone walls. After our picnic, you will enjoy a magnificent view from the hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Roca. A path leads to it from village Crespià, past the rugged church of Sant Bartomeu de Portell. This Gothic-style sacred building, which is embedded in a rock face made up of boulders, is located at the top of the rock face that rises high above the river Fluvià. In the distance you can see the medieval village Besalú. It is a jewel of a Romanesque town with a bridge over the two rivers and a Jewish past whose old quarter is almost intact. Your destination is the lovely Hotel Jardins de la Martana, located right next to the famous medieval bridge. You cross it on foot and find our restaurant for dinner and enjoy the special ambience of this place.
Day 4: On your last day, you leave Besalú and the unique atmosphere of this old medieval village, whose squares, pillars carved into stone and cool, shady, vaulted passageways are a true wonder. The peaks of the Alta Garrotxa are always in sight. The scent of wild herbs and Mediterranean aromas is in the air. You trot at a long, rhythmic trot along the small paths between the country houses with magnificent views of the Pyrenees. Back in Vilafreser, you head towards Ollers, where you stop for a picnic to tighten. Now it gets a little hillier and you return to Can Grau via Sant Mer and Les Serres.
Day 5: After a hearty breakfast, you will be taken to the airport.
