An extremely varied ride in one of the most beautiful areas of Iceland. You will follow an old route, cross rivers and lava fields, and have glaciers and the wild mountains of the highlands in close proximity. Through a green, hilly area north of the Hekla volcano, you will reach the volcanic area of Landmannalaugar, where a naturally warm river invites you to take a dip. The landscape of this remote nature reserve is absolutely unique: between rugged mountains in every shade of colour, steam rises from hot springs and streams carve their way through red earth. The journey ends in the fertile, green areas of Fljótshlíd, where the dramatic saga of the wise Njáll took place 1,000 years ago. A beautiful, challenging tour with long riding days of up to 8 hours!

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Reykjavik and dinner together.

Day 2: Drive to Fellsmuli Farm and set off on horseback through fertile, green countryside at the foot of the Hekla volcano. You will cross a river and continue on to Rjúpnavellir, where you may spot some rock ptarmigans.

Day 3: Ride along the mountains to Landmannahellir. A wide, water-rich landscape with a stunning mountain panorama in all colours awaits you. Here you will often encounter small groups of woolly Icelandic sheep, which roam freely in the mountains in summer. In Landmannahellir, you will spend the night on the idyllic riverbank, surrounded by green mountains.

Day 4: Ride through the mountains to the remote Landmannalaugar valley. After a dip in the warm river and a short walk through the incredible volcanic landscape with steaming springs, you will ride back to Landmannahellir. On the way, you will enjoy views of the unique mountain world, where even in summer there are still patches of snow. Red, black and green mountains form a picturesque back .

Day 5: You leave the idyllic river valley and ride west to the green mountain Loðmundi. You follow the beautiful mountain pass with views of snow-capped peaks to a fjord. Then you continue to Lake Hrauneyjarlón, where you spend the night in a mountain hut.

Day 6: Until midday, you follow soft, black sand tracks at a brisk pace across endless lava fields – a wonderful riding area! Then you ride back to Rjúpnavellir along the Valafell mountain. The endless mountain landscape, covered in black sand and yellow-green moss, forms an extremely bizarre back .

Day 7: Today you ride along the river to the striking Burfell mountain, which is said to be home to trolls. After a few kilometres of sandy black desert, you will enjoy an excellent view of the wide Thjófafoss (Thieves' Waterfall), about which your guides will tell you some exciting stories. Then you will ride through a sparse forest to Fellsmuli Farm, where the horses will stay. Return to Reykjavík at around 5 p.m. Subject to change!

Accomodation
On the first day, you will stay in a cosy guest house at a riding stable in rooms with 2 to 4 beds. Dinner and breakfast will be served in the beautiful hotel restaurant.

There are no hotels available in the often very remote areas you will be riding through. Some of the accommodation is in guesthouses with 4- to 6-bed rooms, but most of the time you will stay in dormitories or hiking huts where all guests sleep together. Hot showers are usually available, but some accommodation may only have washing facilities and toilets. Power sockets are not available every night.

Saddle & Tack: Snaffle and Icelandic trekking saddles

Experience: You should have at least 5 years of regular riding experience and be able to ride unfamiliar horses in all gaits without instruction. A brisk riding tour with some ups and downs; there will also be some fast downhill riding! You will be taught how to tölt on site.

Horses: You to ride on very sure-footed and enduring Icelandic horses. There are 2-3 riding horses available for each rider to stand rider, who are accompanied in a free-roaming herd.
