This 17th century Hacienda has been transformed into a charming Ecuadorian country inn. It is located approx. 90 minutes from Quito. The equator is about 30 minutes away. Just a garden path away, the Monasterio de Cusin lends a special atmosphere to the large complex with towers, courtyards, parapets and walls adorned with buttresses. The property is situated 2,400 m up in the mountains, on the edge of the village of San Pablo de Lago and its crater lake, which is approx. 3 km long.
The mountains Cotacachi (4,663 m), Mojanda and Imbabura characterize the green landscape, which is reflected in the San Pablo lagoon. About 19 km to the south, the equator passes the snows of Cayambe (5790 m). Cusin's white walls and terracotta tiles under the green-blue sky in the vast valley are a complete contrast to city life.
40 comfortable guest rooms and cottages with fireplaces and fine Andean craftsmanship will become your home away from home. All have a private bathroom as well as garden and mountain views. Most of the rooms have a fireplace. All rooms are decorated in typical Andean style with lots of traditional furniture and indigenous art.
The main house and the beautiful, large garden with various plant and bird species offer plenty of space to linger.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Hacienda Cusin in the morning. Check-in and lunch. In the afternoon, a 2-hour ride to get to know your horse and the guide. There is time to explore the area, go for a walk or visit the Otavalo market, where you can buy handicrafts. Afternoon tea and candlelight dinner at Hacienda.

Day 2: This ride offers a spectacular combination of indigenous communities, deep forests and breathtaking views, with a nice mix of easy walking and the opportunity to gallop. For the first 45 minutes, you'll climb from San Pablo up the narrow, dusty roads that pass through the indigenous communities of Imbaburita, Angla and Topo to lead.
You reach a certain height and then ride into an untouched forest of eucalyptus trees, from where you have a magnificent view. Coming out of forest, you will come across golden wheat fields and green vegetation planted on the steep slope. In front of you is the summit of La Avra.
On the way back you pass through another section of forest, through the municipality of Imbaburita and then through town San Pablo.

Day 3: You will cross fast the valley with its various farms and then begin to climb the Cusin-mountain through eucalyptus forests up to the tree line mentioned above and up to the summit. After enjoying the 360° view of the beautiful valleys, we descend to our picnic area and return home in the afternoon.
This is a steep ride with narrow paths. You ride overlooking the greenhouses of the rose plantation, through eucalyptus forests, rocks, s and slippery slopes. After a long ascent through the forest you come to an overgrown cobblestone road that leads further up. Here you have a view down to lake. Dinner and overnight stay at Hacienda.

Day 4: Excellent ride to appreciate the best landscapes of the area. You can enjoy the calm and relaxing views of the San Pablo lagoon, recognize the greatness of town Otavalo and the beautiful Imbabura volcano. During the ride you will to stop to enjoy your picnic and then continue with the views of the forest, small villages and more.
Considered one of the most beautiful rides in the area. Dinner and overnight stay at Hacienda.

Day 5: Departure.If desired, the riding program can be shortened slightly to leave more time for other activities (sightseeing, cycling, hiking, etc.).
Additional days on Hacienda are also possible. On request, Spanish lessons can be offered on Hacienda (prices on request)

Accomodation
The Hacienda has been restored and was built in the 17th century. It is located just north of Quito near the mostly snow-covered Cayambe mountain. The very individually furnished guest rooms mostly have direct access to the garden. The common rooms are furnished in antique style and have a wood-burning stove. Spanish lessons are available for an extra charge.

Saddle & Tack: South American (western style).

Experience: Possible from advanced beginner; slow riding pace with trot and canter. Helmets are compulsory.

Horses: Peruanische Criollos and crosses.
