This adventure ride immerses you in the tropical forest as you experience the authentic rural Costa Rican way of life and witness extraordinary natural diversity and wildlife. This horseback riding adventure takes place in the waters and surroundings of Carara National Park - a true gem that is home to a wide range of natural habitats and biodiversity like no other in Central America. This ride is designed for rider and nature lovers who want to observe tropical wildlife, especially birds. Among the most common animals to be seen are birds such as macaws, parrots, parakeets and toucans, as well as mammals such as monkeys, coatis, agoutis (guinea pigs), sloths, umbilical pigs and tayras (a type of marten). With a bit of luck, you may also come across a shy jaguarundi (American wild cat species). You will comb through miles of untouched tropical land on a network of unpaved trails in an area where Mesoamerican and South American flora and fauna meet and which combines a variety of life zones, including pre-montane transitional and lowland forests. During this riding adventure you will explore the rural life of Costa Rica on mountain trails, visit remote villages and discover untouched natural landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. Upon arrival, you will be met by one of our representatives and taken to your hotel near the airport.

Day 2: In the morning, short drive to Eco-Safari Ranch, located along the Trinidad River in the arid Central Pacific region, the starting point of your riding adventure. After being assigned horses and our presentation, you will take a short ride on our property to ensure you are comfortable with your horse and get used to the local riding style and commands. While our horses are brought to the starting point of the ride, we visit the local town to do some last minute shopping before heading off to remote trails. We meet up with our horses in Lagunas, in the lowlands of the Turrubares Mountains, where our tropical adventure begins. We continue our ride on trails bordering the Carara National Park to Galan (approx. 12 km on horseback).

Day 3: Exploring the Carara National Park
Today you will explore the rainforest adjacent to Carara National Park, which means "river of the lizards" in the indigenous Huetar language. Carara is considered a "must" among animal lovers and professional birdwatchers. The park was established as a biological reserve in 1978 and is now considered a biological island, as dense agriculture and livestock farming have been practiced in its surroundings since the pre-Columbian era. The 4,700 ha. Carara Biological Reserve is in a unique location in the transition zone between tropical moist forest and rainforest in the Pacific lowlands. Although most of the vegetation in the reserve remains evergreen and is characteristic of the wet forest life zone, there are a number of species that lose their leaves in the dry season, showing their affinity to the drier climate in the north of the reserve. Riding time approx. 4-5 hours.

Day 4: Carara National Park - Sur de Turrubares - Monte Galán
After a hearty breakfast, we follow the south-eastern hiking trail on the edge of Carara National Park towards the remote village of Sur de Turrubares - a charming rural community located in a hidden valley surrounded by a magnificent tropical forest and beautiful mountains. Here you can really isolate yourself from the rest of the world. During school hours we can visit the local school and bring some school supplies (guests are welcome to bring school supplies). After a visit to the local bar (if open), we head up to our next destination: Finca Galán. On the way there we have to cross a few rivers as we continue to gain altitude. On the way to the Turrubares mountains, the views become more and more beautiful.

Day 5: Ride into the Pontenciana Mountains or Lanas & Aguas Calientes
Today you have the option of heading towards the Potenciana Mountains to ride. The route is characterized by spectacular mountains and distant views of the Pacific Ocean at the end of the hilly mountains and valleys. On the way to the Potenciana Mountains, you will reach higher altitudes that offer spectacular views. You to ride through farmland and on a mountain path through foothills and oak forests. The Turrubares and Potentiana Mountains are the only high coastal mountains in Central America. During the ascent, you can observe the changes in the forest as the lower temperatures allow more ferns, mosses and bromeliads to grow. On this day you can enjoy incomparable views of the valleys and the Pacific coast. Riding time approx. 3-4 hours.
If it is rainy, you can visit the municipality of Lanas instead, located between the Lanas and Tulín river basins. This area is mainly dedicated to livestock farming and the small town consists of houses along a country road with a Catholic temple, a football pitch and two schools.

Day 6:
Ride-free day
Today is a rest day for the horses and a good opportunity to experience the real and rural Costa Rica! You can take part in a guided hike through the rainforest, help with the farm work or simply relax in the hammock! You can learn about seasonal crops, farming techniques and the challenges local farmers face to grow, harvest and sell their produce. Corn, sweet potatoes, cocoa, beans, yucca and sugar cane are among the crops grown in this area.

Day 7:
Ride from Galán via Delicias and San Gabriel to Mata de Platano
After a hearty breakfast, you begin the descent from the Turrubares mountains towards the Pacific coastal plain. On a dirt road road you reach the cattle breeding areas of the villages of Delicias and San Gabriel. Following the paths of the mountain farms, you finally reach the river Turrubaritos, which you cross several times and along which you ride. You spend the night on the banks of the river at village Mata de Platano. Bring your swimsuit to cool off in the river's swimming holes! Riding time approx. 4-5 hours.

Day 8:
Ride from Mata de Platano to the Pacific coast
Your last ride takes you over the Turrubaritos-river, which joins the Tulín-river before finally forking into the Pacific. You to ride over the Fila Negra ridge with incredible views of the coast and then down into the lowlands to Playa Hermosa on the central Pacific coast and one of the best surfing destinations in the country due to its consistent waves all year round. After the ride along the beach, you say goodbye to the horses and enjoy some more time on the beach in the shade of the wild almond trees. You then drive back to San Jose.

Day 9: The morning is at your leisure and you will be transferred to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in time for your return flight.Non-rider:
Non-riders are welcome to accompany their riding partners and can take part in the following activities, for example: White water rafting, zip-lining, hiking, crocodile boat safari, kayaking, snorkeling.
