Unser Tipp
Experience the unknown beauty of West Africa. Senegal is not yet very well known, especially in the German-speaking area, and has therefore been spared from mass tourism so far! Wonderful beaches and national parks await you here - look forward to many bird species and wonderful landscapes.
Beschreibung & Reiseverlauf
Senegal is one of the least developed countries in West Africa regarding tourism. The country borders Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south.
The Sine Saloum region through which you ride leads is located in the north of Gambia and south of the coastal section of the Petite-Côte Region. The area of the region covers 180,000 hectares, is still very natural and has so far been spared from mass tourism. Here you will also find the Saloum Delta National Park, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the area where the former kingdoms of Sine and Saloum were located and the waters of the same name flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Sine-Saloum Delta is known for its rich diversity of animal and plant life, as the mixing of fresh water from the Sine-Saloum River with the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean creates a special and unique habitat. On the one hand you will find the small flamingo, various species of terns, avocets, herons, pelicans, cranes and storks. Many migratory birds spend the winter in this region. The landscape is flat, but varied - with many palm forests and baobabs (baobab trees). Experience authentic Senegal, pass through typical villages and look forward to the warm hospitality of the locals.
There are two riding programs to choose from: A trail ride with different overnight stays and star rides, where you only spend two nights away from the farm.
Reiseverlauf
Senegal star rides: (Senegal riding tour below)
Day 1: Arrival in Dakar. You will be picked up at the new international airport of Dakar (Dakar Blaise-Diagne DSS) and taken to the farm (transfer time approx. 1.5-2 hours). The farm is located in the heart of the Sine-Saloum delta. You will receive a warm welcome at the farm and enjoy your first dinner. Overnight stay on the farm.
Day 2: First ride around the farm (approx. 3 hours)
After a first restful night, a delicious breakfast awaits you. You will then take a boat to the island of Mar to attend a local fair. The island is home to around 2000 people and consists of four villages. MarLodj is home to the island's only church, which is famous for its Sunday mass accompanied by drumming, sacred trees and artists who create sand paintings. Afterwards you drive back to the farm and enjoy lunch together. In the afternoon, the horses are divided up and you go on your first test ride (approx. 3 hours) through the delta. Experience the Senegalese savannah, the tree landscapes and sandy paths from horseback. You arrive back at the farm just in time for sunset and enjoy the wonderful colors of the setting sun. Round off the day with dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.
Day 3: Farm - Palmarin - Farm (riding time approx. 7 hours)
After breakfast, you set off on a longer ride over long sandbanks. Depending on the season, you have the chance to see pelicans, flamingos and herons. You always have the opportunity for brisk gallops along the pristine sandy beaches - these await you here as far as the eye can see. You ride in the direction of Palmarin. Once there, you can enjoy a picnic on the beach - enjoy!
Palmarin stretches all the way to Litoral and consists of three ecosystems - the mangrove, the forest and the savannah, so you can look forward to a beautiful, varied landscape!
The nature reserve inspires with its rich flora and fauna. You will hear the cries of the sacred ibis piercing the water or the rattling of the wings of the heron as it flies away. At the end of your ride, you can enjoy the sunset and admire how the sun sets behind the meanders of the bolong (inlet) - a beautiful sight! Afterwards you return to the farm and sit together over dinner.
Day 4: Farm - Ngazobil (Riding time approx. 7 hours)
Today, you will be riding for a longer period again—about 50 km lie ahead, passing small, authentic villages and through large palm forests. In the morning, you will ride through the bushes until you reach some villages, such as Sérères, Bambaras, or Peuls. You can make a brief stop at a school if you have brought any school supplies for the children. They will be very happy to receive them—there is a great shortage of many things here! After lunch, you continue through bushland until you reach the village of Ngazobil. Here, there is a monastery that belongs to the Order of St. Joseph, not far from the sea. You will spend two nights here and enjoy the silence and tranquility of this place. If you don’t want to ride all day, you can also split the day and only ride part of the way.
Day 5: Ngazobil (Riding time approx. 3-4 hours)
You will ride from the beach to the village of Mbodiène, passing a lagoon where many birds nest. The panorama here is absolutely breathtaking, as it is home to one of the largest tern nesting colonies in the world. You return to the monastery for lunch. In the afternoon, you have time to relax. You can go swimming with the horses—an unforgettable experience! Later, you will visit the harbor of Joal and experience the daily life of the local fishermen. You will repeatedly see fishing boats arriving, and the place is bustling with activity.
Overnight again at the monastery—let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep!
Day 6: Ngazobil - Farm (Riding time approx. 7 hours)
Today, you are in for another long ride of about 50 km. You will slowly ride back to the farm, but this time on a different path than when you first began your journey. You can also choose to only ride part of the way. Once again, you will enjoy long, faster gallops as you ride through the Saloum Islands. These islands consist of intertwined mangrove trees (tropical trees found in coastal areas, forming dense forests). In 1981, the area was declared a biosphere reserve and in 2011, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Saloum Delta is one of Africa's largest mangrove areas. You will ride along the mangrove trees on the secret path to the Gate of Paradise. Afterwards, depending on the tides, you will have the opportunity to ride to Fadiouth Island, one of three shell islands in Senegal. With about 9,000 inhabitants living on 15 hectares, it is one of the most densely populated islands in the world, connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge. Depending on the water level, you may get wet while crossing, from your feet to your backside, depending on the tide. However, the beauty of the landscape and the faster riding will compensate you for it. In the evening, you will return to the farm, dry off, and enjoy the peaceful end of the day.
Day 7: Farm Ride (Riding time approx. 6 hours)
You will start your ride toward the village of Roh, in the north of Ndangane. You will experience wonderful gallops along long sandbanks, passing rice fields along the way. Stunning views along the bay await you, where you will stop to enjoy your picnic. Towards the end of the day, you will ride back to the farm, passing a massive termite mound on your way. Upon arriving at the farm, you will have to say goodbye to the horses that have accompanied you throughout the week. In the evening, you will reflect on the week and share your experiences during your final dinner together.
Day 8: Free Day
After breakfast, you will have the chance to go shopping and visit the local market. You will have lunch once again at the farm. Afterward, you will be taken to the airport in Dakar and, with a heart full of memories, bid farewell to the beautiful country of Senegal.
Senegal Riding Tour:

Overnight in a campsite. Wi-Fi and a swimming pool are available.
Day 3: Palmarin - Fadial (5 hours on horseback)
In the morning, you will ride through the mangrove forests, passing the salt pans, and then along the Bolongs (saltwater channels that run through the mangrove forests). Lunch will be taken at the Palmarin Nature Reserve. After the siesta, you will gallop along endless, untouched beaches toward Fadial. You will pass through beautiful Bolongs, and depending on the tide, you may find yourself riding through the mangroves with water up to the horse's withers. Overnight in simple huts in the village of Fadial.
Day 4: Fadial - Ngazobil (4 hours on horseback)
In the morning, you will meet the local villagers before riding along the Bolongs. The very safe terrain is perfect for splendid gallops. Then, you will ride to Fadiouth Island, where you can see the amazing shell cemetery and the grain storage houses. After a lunch break and a siesta, you will head to the Ngazobil Nature Reserve Forest.
Overnight stay with the brothers in a monastery, with accommodations specially prepared for you (Wi-Fi available).
Day 5: Ngazobil - Mbodiène (3.5 hours on horseback)
You will cross the protected forest and then ride along a large, endless beach, where you will be completely alone. Between the lagoon and the ocean, the beautiful landscape attracts thousands of birds of all kinds. You will return to the monastery for lunch. After the siesta, a relaxing afternoon awaits: you will go swimming with the horses. Afterwards, you will head to the harbor to watch the fishermen arrive. The fishing port of Joal is a large, colorful, and bustling harbor.
Overnight again at the monastery.
Day 6: Ngazobil - Simal (6 hours on horseback)
Today, you will ride into the bush and pass through the villages of the Serer, Bambara, and Peuhl people. You will visit a school. The lunch break will take place in the middle of the bush. After the siesta, you will ride to Simal through very varied landscapes.
Overnight by the water in a traditional Peuhl straw hut. Wi-Fi and a swimming pool are available.

The final stage of your journey takes you through the Bolong of Simal. Along the way, you will visit the village of Djilor (the birthplace of Léopold Senghor). You will pass through rice fields and stop at a massive 4-meter high termite mound!
Overnight at the riding farm.
