Beschreibung & Reiseverlauf

Immerse yourself in the Greenlandic summer. It is short, but beautiful and adventurous: the midnight sun shines over the large glaciers and the ice blocks floating in the turquoise water. You will stay in a simple guesthouse by a beautiful fjord surrounded by green hills and partly in a simple hostel. Across the water you will see the foothills of a large glacier and in the water you will see the characteristic ice blocks floating in the water. The rides and the mini trail lead you close to the perpetual ice, over rugged mountains with a great panorama and past ruins from the Viking Age. You can also explore the fjord with its icebergs by boat. Immerse yourself in the special world of the Arctic Circle, home to whales, polar bears and musk oxen. Greenland is the country with the lowest population density, only the ice-free coasts are sparsely inhabited. The island has less than 60,000 inhabitants, the population density tends towards 0 per square kilometre. Most of the inhabitants are fishermen and shepherds, life is very original and offers a perfect recreation from central European hustle and bustle. Your hosts also own about 500 sheep, which graze on the surrounding meadows.

Reiseverlauf

Day 1: Arrival at Narsarsuaq airport and collective transfer by boat to the farm. The trip takes about 15 minutes and you will already see the first ice chunks that have detached from the nearby glacier. Dinner together and overnight stay in the guesthouse with three guest rooms, shared bathroom and kitchen. From the terrace you have a great view over the fjord.

Day 2: After breakfast the horses are waiting for you and you can start your first ride to the Issormiut farm. The way there leads you over a green mountain with a beautiful view over the deep blue water and the big glacier that rises behind Narsarsuaq. Riding time approx. 2 hours. Overnight stay again in the guesthouse at the horse farm.

Day 3: Today you will first ride to Qassiarsuk, where you will encounter some ruins from the Viking Age. If possible, you will be given a guided tour and learn more about the Vikings like the famous Leif Eriksson who lived here. After lunch you will ride on to Tasiusaq Farm, where the horses stay. Guests will stay overnight in the public Sermilik Hostel. In the evening you will enjoy a traditional meal and learn about the life and history of Greenland. Riding time: about 3 hours.

Day 4: Short transfer back to the horses. Today you can expect a wonderful ride along the beach with a view of icebergs, which set bizarre accents in the turquoise water. Continue riding up to the foothills of a huge glacier before you ride back to the farm, where the horses will be left behind on a paddock once again. Riding time: about 2 hours.

Day 5: Today you will ride through the partly green, partly rugged mountains back to the guesthouse.

Day 6: Rest day for the horses while the riders take a boat trip to the impressive glacier Qooqqut.

Day 7: After breakfast you will set off on a long day´s ride, which will take you high into the mountains (approx. 30 km). From Mount Naajat you will enjoy a fantastic panorama over the glacier world and to Mount Illerfissalik on the other side of the fjord.

Day 8: Breakfast and transfer to the airport. Subject to change at any time!

Unterkunft

The overnight stays are mainly in the simple guest house of the farm between Bergen and the beach. Here everything necessary is available. There are three guest rooms (each for 2-3 persons), a common bathroom and a spacious kitchen-living room. From the terrace you can enjoy a great view over the fjord. The farm, like most farms in Greenland, is mostly self-sufficient, which is why there can be occasional power cuts. Approx. two overnight stays take place outside in the Sermilik Hostel (2 to 4 bedded rooms). Please note that accommodation and food are of a national standard and very basic. Some meals are taken directly in the house of your hosts, so you can experience how Greenlanders live.

Pferde, Reiten & Zaumzeug

Pferde: App. 10 Icelandic horses. Lovely and well-schooled, ideally adapted to the rocky terrain.

Sattel & Zaum: Icelandic trekking saddles and water bridles.

Reiterfahrung: From approx. 3-5 years of riding experience, also in the terrain. Due to the terrain, the rides are rather quiet with occasional trot/tolt and gallop sections, but only advanced riders are taken.
