Beschreibung & Reiseverlauf

The starting point of this exciting horseback riding tour is an authentic estancia in the Los Glaciares National Park, which stretches along the banks of the southern arm of Lago Argentino. With its impressive area of over 12,000 hectares, the estancia reaches as far as the Chilean border. It was once specialized in sheep breeding and still has a small flock, but now the focus is on breeding Hereford cattle. Enjoy the stay at the estancia with star rides to the peaks of the surrounding mountains and a tour to the remote corners of the Los Glaciares National Park. Before you is a wonderfully wild landscape with crystal clear lakes, forests, impressive mountains and glaciers. On horseback, you´ll venture into areas that no vehicle can reach. The spirit of the first pioneers is tangible. During the tour you will stay overnight in mountain huts, which are also often used by mountaineers on their way to the next peak or glacier. Along the way you will enjoy magnificent views of the Frías, Gorra, Grande and Dickson glaciers.

Some dates may coincide with cattle or sheep drives and cattle work in the Corrals.

Reiseverlauf

Example of a glacier ride program:
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at the estancia in the late afternoon. After you have settled in and looked around the main house, you will get to know your guide and the horses. Maybe you can already take a first ride (no guarantee). You ride through a small forest, see the impressive Hereford cattle of the estancia and finally reach an area called "La Angostura". Here the southern arm of Lago Argentino merges into Roca Lake.
In the evening a delicious Argentinean dinner awaits you, such as lamb roasted over an open fire.

Day 2: Day at the Estancia
Today you will discuss the tour with your guides and prepare the horses and material accordingly. The rest of the day is at your free disposal. You have time to explore the surroundings of the estancia on foot or by bike or just relax at the lodge. Maybe you can also watch the gauchos at their work like shearing sheep.

Day 3: Puesto La Rosada
The horses carry you uphill to the Cordón de le Cristales. The higher you climb, the better the view of the lake. In the distance you can see the whole Lago Argentino, the largest lake in Argentina. On the other side of the lake rises the Cerro Cervantes (2.380m), whose peak is covered with snow all year round. Over a wooded plateau you finally reach the Frías glacier. You will reach a mountain hut, which is mainly used by shepherds who look after their animals. Here you have your lunch. Surely one of the shepherds will be there. Their knowledge of the region is immense. They know every stone and every one of their animals and can count them with one look. In the afternoon you will ride to the boundary stone that marks the end of the estancia and at the same time the border of Argentina to Chile. Here in this remote area you will certainly feel a little like the old pioneers who settled the country back then, here in the southern south. Dinner and overnight stay in the hut. Please note: The hut has a room with 2 bunk beds (max. 4 persons) and a dining room. For groups of more than 4 persons, the additional persons will be accommodated in a tent.

Day 4: Cachorro and lagoon of April 3rd
It is time to go deeper into the wilderness! In the morning you will ride up to the mountain range Cordon de los Cristales. Magnificent views accompany the ascent. Finally, you will ride again through wide forests on paths that were used for the big sheep drives. In the valley of Río Cachorro you leave the forest behind and ride down to the river. You will see the Frías glacier and the huge granite rock "el Dedo de Cesar" (Caesar´s thumb). Between rocks and pastures, avoiding the swamps, you will reach the Corrals of the Río Cachorro. Here you will have a picnic before you ride on to Laguna 3 de Abril, a favourite habitat of flamingos and countless other water birds. Here you will find the hut where you will stay overnight. There is a bedroom with three bunk beds and a room that serves as kitchen and dining room. Until dinner is ready, you will drink a typical mate together.

Day 5: Lagoon of the 3rd of April
After breakfast you ride south to the "balcony of the glaciers". The path runs parallel to the southern arm of Lago de Argentino. Before you reach the end of the lake, leave the horses grazing and climb to a higher vantage point on foot. From here you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the lake, the Laguna Corazón and the Lago Frías. In the distance you can see the glaciers Gorra, Frías, Grande and Dickson. Afterwards you hike to the beach at the end of the lake and along the Frías River to the Corazón Lagoon where the surrounding deep green forests are reflected in the blue water. The water is so clear that you can watch the trout between the rocks. Here you will have lunch before returning to the horses. On horseback you will return to the hut at Laguna 3 de Abril, where you will spend another night.

Day 6: Southern arm of Lago Argentino
Today you will ride back to the estancia. It is 18km along the beautiful shore of the lake. In time for lunch you will reach the lodge. In the afternoon departure and transfer back to El Calafate or extension.

Please note that the itinerary is subject to change.

In November there is a shorter 5-day tour without the 3rd day (Puesto La Rosada).

Unterkunft

The main buildings of the estancia are built in typical Patagonian style. On all sides you have a wonderful view of the peaks of the Andes. Life on the estancia takes its course and it is not seldom to see the gauchos riding past and rounding up cattle. Behind the house is the vegetable garden, which provides many of the ingredients used in the kitchen.
There are ten bedrooms, all with private bathrooms. In the living/dining room there is an open fireplace. In the "Quincho", a rustic dining room, the asados (grilled specialities) are taken.
The meals at the Estancia are varied. For breakfast there is homemade bread, cake and jam, fresh milk and orange juice. For lunch and dinner there are the typical dishes of the region based on lamb, beef, chicken and vegetables.

The hut during the tour has a bedroom with three bunk beds and a dining room. Meals are prepared on the wood stove while you drink mate together and review the day. There is no shower, but you can always have water warmed up for washing. The toilet is located outside the cabin. Meals are brought to the hut by an escort vehicle.

Estancia Stay:The sole Estancia stay is available at any time during the season (min. 3 nights) and includes spectacular day rides into the surrounding area of the Estancia. If you wish, you can also do shorter rides or go hiking, cycling etc.
